Project Day!

2016 Computers and TechnologyPublished July 1, 2016 at 2:21 pm 9 Comments

Posting from my secret hideaway workshop today.
I think I have found the time to finally get to play with these old toys.

One of these need only a small memory upgrade.
The other.. I’m not sure about. It was given to me with “issues”.

Will try and update my progress tonight.

    That small memory upgrade failed.
Seems the modules that I have are not compatible.
One … The one that I was planning to has too many pins..while the other is either bad, or incompatible.

So the HP304w will be limited to 128Mb for the meanwhile.

  2. crazymanjd says:

I have an old custom build to diagnose.

  3. crazymanjd says:

The custom built computer boots and runs for the most part… Doesn’t recognize that it has a CD for some reason… Even when it’s set to boot from the CD. Might be the drive, or possible BIOS problems. It asks for a disk in drive A after changing the boot drive order…but unplugging it seems to cure the problem.

  4. crazymanjd says:

Still doesn’t seem too recognize that it has a CD drive though..,..

Maybe I should have called this project days…

Didn’t realize that I would have a number of days to play around with these old boxes…

I have Spears, Wolfenstien(modded),,,,which makes for s real interesting version of Doomstien!!!

Hey…if all I have is 120ish megs of RAM… then I’m going to make the most of it.

Maybe l’ll be able to get the original mapset installed for Wolfenstien during my next visit.

    Happy Independence Day everybody!

temporary link for reference for a current project…

have a windows 7 laptop that will not update…

need to get Windows 10 on it temporarily…
so it can be updated for free later.

will delete this and might even do an article about it soon!

  7. crazymanjd says:

meanwhile I wait for Disk Cleanup to delete Service Pack Backup Files…
the machine is an old CompaQ laptop that might show some potential.

    BTW: Need this too:
Not Found on Microsoft site… (WHY!??)

  8. crazymanjd says:

This one KILLED the laptop? (7/20/2016 @ 3:15pm)
“Searching for installed updates”… Then screen goes black…
    System powers down…
I power it back on, it says “Resuming Windows”.. I click log in…
the screen goes black again… laptop powers off!
Maybe too hot from running on charger? New battery on the way.
Will try again in a half hour or hour.

  9. crazymanjd says:

So at this point I have some cash invested in what appears to be a promising little laptop. It had what I believed to be minor issues… a sticking key (new keyboard) battery didn’t hold charge (new battery on the way)… slow and sluggish (uninstalled some useless bloatware)… Runs real HOT! (probably due to running on charger) see battery on the way–above…

BUT Windows 7 “Automatic Updates” SHOULD WORK…. RIGHT???
